Augidget stared down the barrel of a Gnomish made rifle, her sights directly set on a charging Trogg. She pulled the trigger and with a bang a bullet flew from the barrel squarely into the forehead of her target. All around her were the sounds of gunfire and yells as weapons clashed with flesh. The Trogg invasion had only begun in the past month and already they were threatening to take over the city.
Augidget had been one of many Gnomish Security Soldiers that had volunteered to engage the Troggs while sections of the city were evacuated of its citizenry. Anger welled up inside Augidget, it had only been 3 days since Thermaplugg had betrayed the entire Gnomish race, unleashing his radioactive weapon on both Gnome and Trogg alike, she wanted nothing more then to hunt down and kill the traitor, but she had her duty, and it was to get as many people out of harms way as possible before the Troggs completely overrun the city.
"Augidget! On your five!"
Augidget swirled to her right, a Trogg was literally just about to slam a club into her head, acting purely on instinct Augidget ducked the swipe and drop her rifle. Reaching to her hip, Augidget yanked a Knife from her belt and jammed the blade under the Troggs jaw. She quickly picked up her rifle and fell back into formation with the rest of her squad as the Trogg collapsed.
"Thanks Fenzik."
A male Gnome, taller, though very lithe for his size nodded in return to Augidget, his green mohawk completely still, a result of the countless liters of engine oil he used to keep it upright.
Her squad consisted of 4 marksmen and 2 close combat soldiers, 1 of which whom had already died in the initial engagement, this however had spurred the squad on to fight with an renewed vigor. Each member of the squad was like family to the others, they had trained together, and served together. Most importantly, they've seen out the greatest tragedy in Gnomish History together, and they were determined to see it through to the bitter end.
"These smelly things just keep coming! How many more are there?!"
A pink haired Gnomish women yelled over the sound of combat. Augidget turned to look at the Gnome for a brief moment before firing another shot, the bullet hit its target in the chest.
"For all I know there could be hundreds!"
With an audible groan the Gnome kept shooting. The squad was constantly being pushed back by the sheer overwhelming Trogg numbers. A well built male Gnome with an Ice blue beard yelled out to the team.
"Alright! We're leaving, the last of the citizens are clear! Go go!"
At the command the squad of Gnomes picked up and began shambling backwards. Constantly firing into the thick crowd of Troggs. Augidget looked deep into the crowd, out the tunnel they had dug began pouring out dozens upon dozens more of the creatures, possibly even hundreds, they began washing over the area like a blanket. The squad commander had also seen them, and began yelling out more frantically for the group to retreat.
The group stopped firing and turned around sprinting away from the oncoming wave of Troggs. Out from the thick crowd comes an axe, spinning at high speeds it imbedded itself directly into the back of a black haired Gnome marksman, whom promptly collapsed, dead. Augidget had barely enough time to yell before another one came flying out, narrowly missing her shoulder. With an angry grunt she turn and ran, only to see more Troggs directly ahead of the group, they were completely surrounded.
"Damn.. What are we going to do?!"
The mohawked Gnome frantically looked around down the sites of his rifle, the Troggs were still converging on the Gnomes. Another axe flew out of the crowd, this time imbedding itself in the chest of the pink haired female.
"Sitzi!"
Augidget knelt beside her fallen comrade, lowering her head for just a moment before lifting up her rifle and firing shot after shot into the crowd of Troggs, though each shot found a mark it did nothing to stem the side. The commander looked around frantically before spotting a small hole in a nearby wall, just big enough a Gnome to pass through. He pointed at the hole and yelled to his squad.
"In there! It's out only chance, go!"
Augidget was closest and with a vicious cry of frustration she sprinted and quickly crawled through the small space. One in the corridor at the other side of the wall she looked around down the sights of her rifle, there were no troggs on this side. She heard another scream, it sounded like Fenzik. She quickly looked into the hole and saw him, half crawled into the hole, she couldn't see how he was wounded but she did see blood seeping out from under him.
"Run.. Augidget.."
Fenzik managed to whisper before his head dipped down, dead. With a look of horror on her face Augidget heard the screams of the rest of her squad as they were swarmed by Troggs, she was helpless to save them. She knew it, but she wanted to try and there was no other way through. Beating on the walls. Augidget took a step back, she could hear the troggs trying to bash their way through the wall, though it was too thick to break so easily, Augidget ran as fast as she could, tears already starting to stream down her eyes at the loss of her friends.
It had been hours since she escaped the Trogg swarm, she wondered aimlessly through a section of Gnomeregan, she didn't recognize this part. She chuckled to herself. She had lived 87 years and she still had not seen all of Gnomeregan.
Clang.
Augidget froze, her eyes looking over the area. She had already had her weapon in hand and was looking down the sights. From around the corner stumble a solitary Gnome, he was aged, could be in his late 150s she was not sure, but he was familiar, his bald head, the grey hairline, solid blue eyes. Augidget gasped, it was her father.
"Who's there?!"
The Gnome man raised what looked like a wrench in his hand, though it has been heavily modified and looked like it was conducting some form of electricity. Upon seeing Augidget he lowered the wrench, shock overcoming his own face.
"Augidget.. Is that.. You?"
Augidget lowered her rifle unable to say anything the two approached eachother, complete silence between them, the last time Augidget had seen her father was when she was sent to kill him by her mother decades ago. Dropping his wrench Augidget's father embraced her, a gesture she was not prepared for, she honestly half expected him to whack her with the wrench he had.
After talking for a few minutes the two had began to make their way out of what Augidget had learned from her father as one of the Spider tank workshop sectors, they talked for the entire time. Augidget learned that Spizzle had lost his family during the radiation bomb Thermaplugg had set off and had been trying to make his way out since. When Augidget revealed that it was not an accident Spizzle was enraged at the idea that a Gnome could do that his own people. On such a scale.
After some persuasion Augidget reluctantly began to reveal what had been happening in her life, how she left her mother, and eventually joined up with the Gnomeregan Security Corps, she left the details of her time with a Dwarf out. She still did not wish to remember. As well as the most recent mission to evacuate citizenry and the resulting death of her squad.
"I'm sorry for your loss Augidget.."
Augidget didn't respond at first, she stared ahead blankly as they made their way down one of the numerous corridors of the sector, they had recently reached the spare parts disposal area.
"I'm not the only one who's lost everything."
Spizzle looked at his daughter, a frown crossing his face before being replaced with a reassuring smile.
"Not everything.. You still have me, a father, perhaps when we get out of here, we can make up for lost time.."
Augidget looked at her father, and could not help but smile slightly herself. She harbored no ill will towards this man, and in fact expected him to harbor some to her, but instead there he was, offering her a family, even a small one again.
"I'd like that.. Father."
They smiled at eachother, a moment that seemed to last so long, but all too short.
Clang.
The two Gnomes froze, looking around.
Stomping.
Augidgets stomach lurched, she knew that sound. She turned around and saw them. Troggs, dozens of the creatures. Augidgets eyes widen with horror. How did they find them so quickly? Are they even the same Troggs from before? Spizzle grabbed Augidget by the arm and began running causing Augidget to stumble after him for a moment before sprinting alongside him.
"Come on! We need to escape!"
Augidget followed her father, running faster then she knew she could, all of it seemed in vain though, turning a corner, they came across a collapsed tunnel, it was a dead end.
"Damnit, no no no!"
Augidget ran to the wall, frantically looking for a way to get past, but the corridor was completely sealed. Spizzle took a long moment looking between the dead end and the way back, the Troggs had not yet caught up to them, there was still time.
"Augidget... I want you to hide in the garbage disposal box, and when everything is quiet, run. There was a second hallway two turns down the hall, I will lead them away from you."
Augidget span around, an angry and shocked look on her face. She jumped down the rubble and stood next to her father.
"Like hell you are! I'm not leaving you die like that! If you go, I go with you!"
Spizzle looked at his daughter, a loving smile crossing his face.
"Just as stubborn as me.. I suppose I can't convince you otherwise. Alright then. On my mark we make for that hallway I mentioned, ready?"
Augidget stood next to her father, her rifle drawn and ready to shoot. She was looking away from him entirely.
"Ready."
Spizzle frowned and lifted his wrench, smacking Augidget in the back of the head with the blunt side, hard enough only to knock her out, Augidget collapsed on the ground, still very much alive.
"I'm sorry about that Augidget.. I failed to protect my family.. But I wont let these monsters harm you too.."
Spizzle gently picked up his daughter and moved to the nearby garbage disposal unit. He then opened the top with his free hand before setting Augidget as gently as he possibly could inside and closing it. Just in time too, the first of the Troggs had just began to make its way around the corner.
Picking up his electrowrench, Spizzle stared at the oncoming crowd of Troggs, he had no fear, no regrets he did this for his family. Roaring loudly he charged forward at the crowd of Troggs, swinging hard, his wrench connecting with the first of many Troggs.
Augidget groaned, her head ringing with pain. She could hear something, pattering, like water on metal. But it didn't rain in Gnomeregan, what was that sound then? And for that matter, where was she? What happened? Last thing she remembered was staring down a hallway preparing to fight for her life against troggs with her father.
"Father!"
Opening the top of the trash disposal unit she crawled out. Trogg corpses littered the hallway. above water had begun being sprayed around the area. It was the fire repression system, but what had set it off? She looks around, catching sight of a small gas fire, it has almost been extinguished, hobbling forward her vision blurred for a brief moment. Then she saw it, blood, everywhere, not just the black of Trogg blood, but red, Gnomish blood, she followed the hallway, the water had carried it some distance. She turned a corner, more Trogg corpses, all centered around a single point, at the center, was something.
Augidget gasped, it was a Gnome, a bald, grey haired- her father!
"Father!!"
Augidget dashed forward a few steps, but staggered to a walk as dizzyness overcame her again, she slowly approached her father. tears had already began to run down her cheeks, she knew what had happened now, he knocked her out and hid her away, then fought the Troggs. Augidget walked slowly, all she could see was her father, beaten broken.
"Father... Why did you do it?.. Why did you leave me?.. It's not fair..."
Augidget staggered foward a few more steps standing next to Spizzle, and staring at him.
"What.. What did they do to you?... You were all I had left.. You were everything to me.. Everything.."
Augidget fell to her knees, hands outstretched over her fathers body.
"This.. This just isn't fair.. Father.... Father!"
Augidget lifted her fathers head, staring his now lifeless features before hugging him close.
"Father!!!"
All the pain, anger, anguish, her whole life everyone she had ever known and loved, either died or hurt her, she couldn't contain it anymore, lifting her head she cried out as loud as she could, as if yelling would drive away the pain, she yelled until her throat was dry and sore.
She yelled, because she was helpless to do anything else.
Augidget stared ahead, cold snow awaited her. By some miracle she had managed to find her way to a place she recognized after wondering aimlessly, grief stricken. Everyone she had known was dead, she was alone, all alone and now without a home.
Another Gnome survivor offered her a place where most refugees were staying, but she didn't even respond, she left Gnomeregan, left it all behind. What was left for her now? All she could do was wonder aimlessly, she didn't want anything to do with anyone, not anymore, not Gnome, not Dwarf, not anyone. She wanted to be alone.
Maybe that way, she'll get used to the loneliness.
